Choosing an Industry for Surface Pattern Design

“You need a niche!” Is all I have heard since I have graduated from college. With my diploma in one hand and my tablet in the other, I feel like I have been doodling along as I’m trying to figure out what is my thing. Today, I’m going to be choosing an industry for surface pattern design so that I can design with greater clarity, direction, and passion.

I’m assuming the industry that I choose has to work with my core style, right? No matter how hard I try, my designs always look cute. It just happens. So, I’m living up to it. I have a cute style, just like I have a cute personality. 😉

Iconic images, floral patterns, and seasonal sentiments always inspire me. Therefore, I find myself design cute illustrations. I have to remember to add in geometric shapes into a collection to make the patterns look more complete as a set. I feel like with my most recent collection, Joylyn, I did a much better job designing with a good balance of stripes, florals and stripes and florals together.

Color palettes! For my personal fashion, I LOVE earth tones! I hardly wear bright colors because I’m trying to look like an adult. Plus, I’m 5′ 8″ and 165 pounds. I really don’t want to stand out any more then I have too. #insecurities #loveyourself

However, when I’m designing I always gravitate to fun bright and cute colors. When I try to base my color palette off something calming and nutral it never feels right. Learning color theory is one thing, but putting it into practice is another.

My Surface Pattern Industry Choice

Alright, so I have a cute design style, I like illustrating and I have fun bright colors. To me, it sounds like I’m in the market for children’s products, fabric, and bedroom decor.

If you disagree and have another idea, please leave a comment below and let me know how else I could apply my patterns. I feel like fabric is so obvious, but I know my designs won’t work for wallpaper, but a few designs would make a fun carpet! 🤷🏻‍♀️

I need to put on my big girl pants and pull a portfolio together and start sending it out. Because this girl wants to make money! 💵
