Start Learning Pattern Design with These Two Tutorials

START LEARNING PATTERN DESIGN

Start learning pattern design with these two tutorials.

To be honest, I never paid attention to patterns until I was asked to make a floral pattern at work. I completed two designs, and immediately I craved to understand more about surface patterns. I never took a class on surface or textile design, but I found two free online tutorials that gave me the knowledge I needed to make my own patterns and start selling products.

I hope these tutorials will help you make your own patterns too.

A year before I was interested in patterns, I wanted to learn how to make vector flower arrangements because I am a huge fan or RiflePaper Co. floral styles.

I followed this tutorial from Tutsplus.com.

It took me about 3 hours to complete. If you follow the steps you will learn how to use brushes in Adobe Illustrator to make a floral arrangement.

Once I learned how to use brushes in Adobe Illustrator, I watched this video from Creative Market on how to make repeatable patterns.

With just these two tutorials I began to make my own pattern designs. Once I had a few patterns, I created an Etsy shop to sell my patterns on leggings. Please check out my shop on Etsy, CrystalWhitlowDesign!

Recently, I discovered Denise Anne. She is a watercolor and illustration artist. On her blog, she offers a free pattern concept workbook that will help you develop meaningful concepts for new patterns. Get your copy of the Pattern Concept Workbook.

Once I finish Denise’s worksheets, I’d like to go through the Skillshares: Introduction to Designing Repeat Patterns in Illustrator with Elizabeth Olson. Skillshare has several courses for pattern design, all of which I’m itching to complete. I just need to find the time.

I’d love to see what patterns you create! Tag me on Instagram so I can see your designs! ❤️
