What is Line Weight?
Line weight is simply the thickness of the line. In relation to fonts and lettering, line weight is the thickness of the letters.
It is likely that you are familiar with regular and bold, but there are many other options for line weight depending on the font used. Most fonts do not have many options, but fonts like Universe, Helvetica, Gill Sans, Raleway have many line options. In addition to regular and bold, there is ultra light, extra light, thin, medium, semibold, black, condensed, expanded, stencil, and oblique.
What is a Font Family?
When one font come with many different line weight options, the collection is a font family. It is encouraged to mix fonts of the same font family because they are designed to look good together.
When practicing brush lettering or calligraphy, the line weight varies within each letter formation. The downstrokes are thicker, while thin strokes are more delicate.
